Mucklagh centre's tenth anniversary draws crowds
Mucklagh Community Centre marked its 10th anniversary on Sunday last, with an event celebrating a decade of volunteering, community spirit and achievement.
Hundreds attended the milestone celebration on Sunday afternoon, which had the theme of 'Connection, Celebration and Remembering'.
At the event, chairperson John Cotter announced that the centre has officially cleared its mortgage thanks to the continued success of the Mucklagh Community Centre lotto.
He said plans are now progressing for the next phase, including a redesigned car park, improved accessibility, outdoor seating, an outdoor gym, EV charging points and additional community facilities.
A landmark moment also saw Lesley Nolan presented with the centre's first-ever lotto jackpot of €20,000, while promoter prizes of €500 were awarded to Bernie Foster and Margaret Guinan.
Centre Manager Caroline Bryant described the facility as the "beating heart" of Mucklagh, revealing that more than 44,000 people passed through its doors during the past year.
She said the centre had become far more than a building, providing a welcoming space where people of all ages can connect.
Willie O'Grady reflected on the community effort that transformed the project from an idea to reality. He reminded those present that "it takes a village to build a community", describing Mucklagh Community Centre as living proof of what can be achieved through unity and volunteerism.
Visitors throughout the afternoon enjoyed a photographic exhibition documenting the centre's development over the past decade, alongside displays of local artwork.
Entertainment included close-up magic from Killina's Evan Dunne, face painting, children's activities, a puppet show and homemade refreshments served by volunteers.
The celebrations concluded with a performance by Ruaile Buaile, whose appearance brought the occasion full circle as the band had performed at one of Mucklagh Community Development's first fun days a decade ago, when its members were still schoolboys.
While many enjoyed the traditional Irish favourites, the biggest cheer of the afternoon came when they performed the much-loved song "Killeagh".
