Profile of a Parkrunner: Meet Noeleen

Meet Noeleen Dempsey from Clonbullogue, who recently started taking part in Mountlucas parkrun.

When did you first complete a parkrun?

I actually did my first parkrun in November 2017 and over the next seven years I completed 14 parkruns. I was never a regular due to other commitments. Earlier this year I decided I wanted to do something for myself. On April 25, I decided to join my husband Ger for one of his regular parkruns. I walked most of it but came back over the next few weeks and I found I was running a bit more each time. 10 weeks in and I ran my first ever 5km. It wasn’t easy but the support and encouragement from other parkrunners kept me going. I wasn’t a runner, wasn’t fit, have a few health issues, and I have surprised myself and am incredibly proud of this accomplishment.

What is your favourite thing about parkrun?

I look forward to Saturday mornings in Mountlucas; the welcome, the chats, the positivity, support and encouragement. Everyone has their own story, their own goals and targets. Parkrun is so inclusive; all ages, all abilities, and it’s free. I am inspired by the people I have met on my parkrun journey and would love to be able to inspire someone else.

What’s your take-home message about Mountlucas parkrun?

I would encourage everyone to come along to a parkrun, become part of a community, and walk, run or volunteer. Set your own goals. Feel the health benefits, and most of all, it’s great for your head space.

Mountlucas parkrun is a free event which takes place at Bord na Móna Mountlucas windfarm every Saturday morning at 9.30am sharp. There’s something for everyone at Mountlucas parkrun whether you want to walk, jog, run or volunteer. For more information see parkrun.ie/mountlucas
