Major clean-up of Tullamore River blackspot

Volunteers took part recently in a major clean-up of a blackspot on the Tullamore River.

Members of Tullamore Tidy Towns, Offaly Climate and Biodiversity Action Group, The Grand Canal Way parkrun, local anglers and Junior Tidy Towns joined forces for the Tullamore River and Grand Canal Cleanup supported by Clean Coasts.

The work focused on a blackspot on the river at Bridge Street and over 15 bags of glass, pint glasses, plastic glasses, bottles, discarded litter and cigarette butts were retrieved the bridge area in the town centre.

A crew also focussed on the Bury Quay area of the Grand Canal with long pickers to clean up discarded bottles, cans and litter from Kilbeggan Bridge to Cox's Bridge. Volunteers were treated to a well-earned breakfast on the bank of the canal after their hard work.

The Tullamore Tidy Towns AGM takes place on Wednesday, October 7, at 7pm in the Court Hotel.

The events in Tullamore coincided with the Big Beach Clean weekend, organised by Clean Costs. Across Offaly, some 130 volunteers from removed an estimated 780kgs of litter.
