Vehicle with four bald tyres seized by Tullamore Roads Policing Unit on Tyre Safety Day

A vehicle driven by an unaccompanied learner driver with four bald tyres and no NCT was among those seized by Tullamore Roads Policing Unit on Tyre Safety Day.

As part of National Day of Action focusing on tyre safety, members of Tullamore RPU carried out enforcement activity targeting vehicles that were found to be unsafe and/or not compliant with road traffic legislation.

The vehicle with four bald tyres had previously failed the NCT and had since travelled 1,500km without the tyres being replaced. It was subsequently seized by Tullamore RPU.

A second vehicle with no valid NCT, no front registration plate, and a rear registration plate not conforming to requirements was also stopped. The vehicle had a tyre damaged by a lowered suspension.

Both vehicles were seized and fines were issued.

"Tyres are critical to your safety and the safety of every other road user. Driving on bald or damaged tyres significantly reduces grip and braking performance, particularly in wet conditions," An Garda Síochána Laois/Offaly wrote.

"Before driving, take the time to check your tyres for tread depth, damage and correct pressure. If your vehicle fails an NCT due to defective tyres, ensure the issue is rectified before continuing to drive."
