HSE urging all eligible to get flu and COVID vaccines
The HSE has launched its Winter Vaccination Programme today (8 October), with flu and COVID vaccines available to help prevent serious illness during the winter months.
The HSE said that last year there were over 25,000 confirmed cases of flu, causing the hospitalisation of 6,000 people and 185 people admitted to ICU. Sadly, there were also 300 deaths among people confirmed to have the flu.
Everyone aged over 60 and people with certain underlying medical conditions or a weakened immune system are being urged to get the flu and COVID vaccines.
Both the Flu and COVID vaccines can be given at the same appointment through participating GP’s and pharmacies. The free nasal flu vaccine is available for children aged 2 to 17, and some children may be offered the vaccine through school-based programmes.
Healthcare workers are also being encouraged to take up the vaccine, and dedicated flu vaccination clinics will also be available for healthcare workers.
Dr Louise Marron, Consultant in Public Health Medicine at the National Immunisation Office, said: “Flu and COVID-19 can cause serious illness, particularly for older people and people with underlying health conditions. I encourage everyone eligible for the flu and COVID-19 vaccines to get vaccinated and give yourself the best protection this winter.”
