'Widespread' disruption to HSE services on October 14, due to industrial action

Then HSE is expecting a widespread and significant disruption to HSE services on Wednesday, October 14, caused by public sector work stoppages.

The industrial dispute is surrounding disagreements between unions and the Government, with public sector workers calling for pay measures to address the rising cost of living.

They said that they are planning for the cancellation of non-urgent healthcare services across hospitals and community settings on Wednesday, October 14. This will include normal hospital procedures, appointments, community-based services and primary care services.

Healthcare teams across the country will begin to contact patients directly, with appointments rescheduled as fast as possible.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation said: “While the IMO Council deeply regrets the need to escalate industrial action, it is acting in accordance with the mandate provided by members and in solidarity with colleagues across the health service and wider public sector.

“We hope that Government will urgently enter substantive and meaningful negotiations to ensure our health services and the wider public service can recruit and retain a sustainable workforce.”

In a statement on their website, the HSE said: “Emergency departments, ambulance services (curtailed service) and other critical, time-sensitive healthcare services, such as urgent cancer treatment and dialysis, will continue. People requiring urgent medical attention should not delay seeking care and dial 999 or 112 or attend their nearest Emergency Department.

GPs, GP out-of-hours and pharmacists remain available in the community.

“Engagement on contingency arrangements is ongoing with health sector unions to develop a more complete understanding of what can continue to be delivered next Wednesday. Further updates will be provided as soon as more information becomes available.

“The HSE regrets the inconvenience caused to patients and their families and is grateful for people’s patience and understanding during this time.”
