Boxer from Offaly club departs for European U23 Championships

Budapest was the scene of a famous Irish victory on the football pitch last Sunday, and now the country's best young boxers will be bidding for more glory in the Hungarian capital as it hosts the European U23 Championships.

Portarlington's Rachel Lawless, a member of the Defence Forces who boxes out of St Brigid's Boxing Club in Edenderry, is among the Irish team which departed for the championships today (Friday).

Rachel is competing at 51kg. The draw, which sets out the path to the podium for each boxer in a given weight category, will take place tomorrow (Saturday) evening at around 8pm Irish time.

Two rings will be in operation at Bok Sports Hall until the semi-final stage.

Preliminary rounds, including the quarter finals, will be boxed from Sunday, November 23 to Wednesday, November 26.

Thursday, November 27, is a rest day. The semi finals will take place on November 28 and all finals will take place from 2pm on Saturday, November 29. It is expected that the championships will be live-streamed.

Team Ireland will return home on Sunday, November 30.
