Garda investigation “ongoing” after fatal Offaly fire

A Garda investigation is continuing in an effort to determine the case of a house fire in Moneygall, on the Offaly border with Tipperary, which tragically claimed the life of a woman in her 60s on Friday night last.

According to a statement from the Garda Press Office, members of An Garda Síochána and the emergency services attended the scene of the fatal house fire in Moneygall on the evening of Friday, November 14, at approximately 10pm.

The blaze was brought under control by the fire service and the body of a woman was recovered from inside the residence. No other injuries were reported.

The local coroner was notified, and the woman's body was brought from the scene of the Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore.

The scene was preserved for technical examination and, as of yesterday (Thursday), the Garda investigation into the cause of the fire was "ongoing."

The deceased was named this week as Mary Murray, of Main Street, Moneygall, and formerly of Tipperary town.

Offaly councillor Peter Ormond extended his “deepest sympathies to the people of Moneygall village and surrounding areas”.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and neighbours of the deceased. Many thanks to the emergency services who attended the scene," he said.

The late Ms Murray is reposing in Donovans Funeral Home, Moneygall, this evening (Friday) from 6pm to 8pm.

Her removal will take place on Saturday morning to St Joseph's Church Moneygall at 10.30am, arriving for Requiem Mass at 11am. Burial will take place afterwards in Dunkerrin Cemetery.

May she rest in peace.
