Ashling Murphy Memorial Day this weekend in Tullamore
An Ashling Murphy Memorial Day will take place this Saturday, December 6, in Tullamore's Bridge Shopping Centre.
Running from 10am to 5pm, the day will celebrate the life and legacy of the 23-year-old primary school teacher, traditional Irish musician, and camogie player from Cully, Blueball, Offaly.
Ashling's life ended tragically in January 2022 when she was fatally assaulted while out jogging along the Grand Canal near Tullamore, in an incident that shocked and deeply affected the entire nation.
The national launch of the Ashling Murphy Gaeltacht Scholarship will also take place during the memorial day on December 6.
Ashling, a dedicated múinteoir bunscoile, had a deep grá for the Irish language and worked tirelessly to inspire her pupils and those around her to cherish it. Her favourite seanfhocal was: “Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh siad”, meaning “Praise the youth and they will flourish”.
The family-friendly events of the day will include live music, a monster raffle, and face-painting.
The memorial day has been organised by the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund, which is run by the Murphy family with help from a committee of volunteers.
The committee said it would be grateful to any business that wishes to donate a prize for its raffle on the day. If you’d like to contribute email: AshlingMurphyMemorialFund@gmail.com or send the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund a private message on any of its social media pages to arrange collection.
