Clendennen welcomes Government decision to vote against Mercosur agreement

Fine Gael TD for Offaly,John Clendennen said he has received confirmation that the Government will vote against the EU-Mercosur Trade Agreement, describing the decision as a clear and decisive stand in defence of Irish farmers and Ireland’s high agricultural standards.

“I welcome confirmation that the Government will vote against the Mercosur Agreement. This is the right decision and a strong signal that Irish farmers’ concerns have been heard clearly and consistently at the highest levels of Government,” he said.

Deputy Clendennen said he has raised concerns about Mercosur at every opportunity and has remained in direct contact with Ministers right up to this morning.

“Irish farmers deserve certainty and leadership. They cannot be asked to compete with imports that do not meet the same environmental, animal welfare and food safety standards that are rightly expected of them. This decision recognises that reality.”

While acknowledging the importance of international trade, Deputy Clendennen stressed that trade agreements must be fair and balanced.

“Ireland is a trading nation and open markets matter. However, trade policy must never undermine the livelihoods of our farmers or the high standards that Irish agriculture is built upon. Mercosur, as currently framed, fails that test and I made that point perfectly clear at a recent Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture.”

Deputy Clendennen said the Government’s position demonstrates a broader commitment to standing with farmers across key policy areas.

“The Government is standing with Irish farmers on Mercosur, on the Nitrates Derogation and in defending Irish agriculture at EU level. With upcoming CAP negotiations under Ireland’s EU Presidency, I will continue to advocate strongly to ensure Irish farming is protected, respected and supported.”

He added that his position on Mercosur has been consistent and long-standing. “This is not a last-minute stance. I have been clear throughout that Irish agriculture must not be sacrificed. Today’s confirmation shows that commitment in action.”
