Clendennen confirms full review of Birr OEC activities

Fine Gael TD for Offaly, John Clendennen, has allayed immediate concerns for the future of the Birr Outdoor Education and Training Centre (OEC) following recent engagement with the Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB).

Deputy Clendennen said that following a meeting with LOETB, it was agreed that a full review of activities at the centre would be undertaken, with the aim of ensuring the long-term sustainability of the facility "while protecting as many of its programmes and services as possible".

Concerns for the future of the facility were raised last week when a spokesperson for the centre stated that it was "on the brink of losing its core outdoor education function".

While the rebranding of the site as a national cycling centre has been presented as a strategic development, Deputy Clendennen confirmed that a full review will now take place to examine the future of the site before its future is decided upon.

“I know there has been understandable concern locally following recent reports about the future direction of Birr Outdoor Education Centre. The centre has played an incredibly important role in providing outdoor education opportunities for young people and families across Offaly and the wider Midlands for many years,” Deputy Clendennen said.

“Following my engagement with LOETB, it was agreed that a full review of activities would take place to examine the future of the centre and to ensure it can operate on a sustainable footing into the future.

"OETB have confirmed to me that a marketing and financial plan will published in the coming months to address the long term viability of the centre and current financial deficit of €60,000.”

Deputy Clendennen said he was pleased to confirm that the centre’s popular summer adventure camps will go ahead this summer.

“These camps are hugely popular and provide fantastic outdoor experiences for young people. I am delighted that they will proceed this year and I know that many families will be relieved to hear that confirmation.”

Deputy Clendennen added that there are ambitious plans to invest in the centre to diversify the course offering and strengthen its long-term viability, working with Offaly County Council and Sports Partnership while continuing to build on Birr’s reputation as a hub for outdoor activity and tourism.

“There is significant potential for Birr Outdoor Education Centre into the future, particularly given its location close to the Slieve Bloom Mountains, Lough Boora Parklands and the Midlands greenway network.

“I will continue to engage closely with LOETB, staff, and the local community to ensure that the centre continues to benefit the town of Birr and the surrounding area for many years to come,” he said.
