Chamber honours late John Flanagan with Remembrance Award
Tullamore & District Chamber of Commerce paid tribute to the late John Flanagan at the 2026 Chamber Business Awards on Friday night, presenting a special Remembrance Award in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to business, community and public life in Tullamore.
The award was presented during a poignant moment in the ceremony, where members of the Flanagan family were invited to the stage to accept the honour on his behalf. The tribute reflected not only his achievements as a businessman, but his enduring impact on the development and identity of Tullamore.
Born in Cappincur in 1931, John Flanagan’s journey was one defined by determination, vision and a strong work ethic. Beginning his working life at a young age, he trained as a plasterer before establishing his own construction business in the early 1950s. Through hard work and entrepreneurial spirit, he built a successful enterprise that would go on to play a central role in shaping the physical landscape of the Midlands.
Over the decades, his work extended across housing developments, commercial projects and industrial infrastructure, helping to support economic growth and create opportunities for businesses across the region. His foresight in developing business parks and industrial units provided a foundation for local enterprise and job creation that continues to benefit the community today.
However, John Flanagan’s contribution went far beyond his own business success. He was a passionate advocate for collaboration, leadership and the importance of a strong local business voice. In 1977, he became one of the founding members of the Tullamore & District Chamber of Commerce and served as its first President, helping to establish an organisation that continues to represent and support businesses in the town today.
His commitment to community extended into public service, where he served for many years as a member of both Tullamore Urban District Council and Offaly County Council. In these roles, he worked tirelessly to support the development and wellbeing of the town, always guided by a belief in the importance of collective progress and civic responsibility.
Beyond his professional and public life, John Flanagan was remembered as a devoted family man. Supported by his wife Kitty, he built not only a successful career but a strong and loving family, whose values continue to reflect his legacy.
Speaking at the awards, Chamber President Caroline Murphy Collins acknowledged his lasting impact, noting that his contribution helped shape the modern Tullamore we know today and continues to inspire future generations of business leaders.
