Moneygall to benefit from American Presidents' Trail following Obama legacy

Fine Gael TD for Offaly, John Clendennen believes the village of Moneygall is uniquely positioned to benefit from the newly approved American Presidents' Trail, building on its strong connection to former US President Barack Obama.

Deputy Clendennen said that the cabinet’s approval of the initiative represents a significant opportunity to further develop tourism in Moneygall and across Offaly. The initiative, brought forward by Minister for Tourism Patrick O’Donovan, will highlight the Irish ancestry of 23 US Presidents as part of the America250 Programme, marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

“Moneygall already has a powerful story to tell. The visit of President Obama placed the village firmly on the international stage and created a lasting connection with the United States,” Deputy Clendennen said.

“This new American Presidents' Trail gives us a real opportunity to build on that legacy, attracting more visitors, supporting local businesses and further strengthening community pride.”

Deputy Clendennen said Moneygall should play a central role in the trail given its proven appeal to American visitors.

“We have already seen the impact that a strong heritage link can deliver. Moneygall became a must-visit destination following President Obama’s visit, and this initiative can help sustain and grow that interest into the future,” he said.

“With millions of Americans tracing their ancestry back to Ireland, there is a clear opportunity to bring more visitors into rural communities like Moneygall, ensuring that tourism benefits are felt locally,” added Deputy Clendennen.

The trail will be developed on an all-island basis, with sites marked by native trees and information panels, creating a network of heritage locations connected to US Presidents.

Deputy Clendennen said he will be working with local stakeholders to ensure Offaly maximises its potential under the project.

“This is about building on what we already have. Moneygall has a globally recognised story, now we must ensure it is fully leveraged as part of this national initiative and I was delighted to recently welcome Minister O’Donovan to Moneygall to show him first hand the progress made in village following the Obama visit,” he said.

“I look forward to working with the Minister, local authorities and local community groups to ensure Moneygall and Offaly are to the forefront as this trail is rolled out.”
