Offaly councillor calls for action as farmers and hauliers "do not see a future"

An Offaly councillor has shown her support for the ongoing fuel protests, as she said farmers and hauliers "do not see a future" in their sectors.

Cllr Claire Murray Smale it is "tough to watch" hardworking families struggling.

"I am the proud daughter of a Truck Driver. The income my dad generated from this industry put food on our table, clothes on our back and degrees in our hands. I am forever grateful to him and the sector," she said.

"I know too well how hard people in this sector work, alongside farming and other forms of haulage, and it is tough to watch how hard working families do not see a future in these sectors if they are not helped out."

She has now called for Government to "act and reduce tax on fuel".

"The €250 million package was a start but it has been swallowed up with further rising costs across an unstable geopolitical landscape."
