Cloughmoyle School House is the venue for a talk organised by Shinrone Heritage Group on Wednesday, April 22, at 7.30pm.

History talk in Shinrone this week

Shinrone Heritage Group will host what promises to be a fascinating local history talk on 'The Ordinary and Everyday in the Eighteenth Century' tomorrow (Wednesday, April 22).

The talk is taking place at 7.30pm in Cloughmoyle School House, Main Street, Shinrone. Eircode: R42 YN97.

History is often told through great battles, political upheaval and famous names. However, for most of our ancestors, the past was shaped not by headline events, but by ordinary routines such as work, food, family, neighbours, the seasons, customs and survival.

That is what makes the upcoming talk by Dr David Fleming, of the University of Limerick, such an interesting and different take on history.

Speaking ahead of the event, Ger Murphy of Shinrone Heritage Group said it is looking forward to welcoming Dr Fleming to Shinrone.

“This is a great opportunity to take a journey into the daily lives of people some 250 years ago,” he said.

During the talk, Dr Fleming will explore life through the agricultural year, the rhythm of the seasons, and the ways people interacted in their local communities.

It promises to be a wonderful opportunity to examine the routines, experiences and realities that shaped the world of our ancestors.

Ger Murphy added that the lecture will also provide an opportunity to look beyond major historical events and consider how traditions such as Chalk Sunday, Straw Boys, Skellig weddings, Shrove Tuesday celebrations and wren boys all contributed to and influenced the everyday life of our ancestors in the eighteenth century.

All are welcome to attend this free talk and no booking is required.
