Tullamore drama society bringing Bernard Farrell comedy to stage
Tullamore Amateur Dramatic Society (TADS) is eagerly anticipating its forthcoming production of Bookworms in Esker Arts Centre from Wednesday, May 13, to Saturday, May 16, nightly at 8pm.
Written by Bernard Farrell, this comedy is set in early post Celtic Tiger years, and is centred on the monthly, humdrum, mostly mundane 'girls only' book club.
However, this month’s get-together differs from all previous gatherings and Ann, the host realises, even before the event begins, that she is guilty of committing the fatal mistake of allowing "the men" infiltrate "the last bastion of female exclusivity" the book club, their book club!
Still reeling from the repercussions of the recession, unemployment, crippling debt, a crumbling marriage and not forgetting empty nest syndrome and slow burning simmering resentments, Ann is determined to show, despite her life disintegrating around her, that all is well and thriving in the Henderson household.
Farrell's jaundiced view of Irish society is displayed by idiot behaviour, farcical situations, monumental misunderstandings and absurdity. The night descends into a riotous display of oneupmanship, keeping up with the Jones’s, arrogance, suspicious behaviour, socially biting comedic dialogue and utter mayhem.
The attendees are a motley crew, a frustrated housewife and bumbling husband, an arrogant, sardonic bank manager and his very ‘put upon’ stuck up wife.
A quirky family friend who lives a tragically charmed life. Not to mention the brother in the attic and the daughter in Australia! A recipe for a very interesting evening!
TADS are delighted to have Jacinta Dillon, at the helm for this production. Many will be familiar with Jacinta’s acting talents in recent plays, such as Portia Coughlan, The Incarnation of the Prodigal Son and Dead Man’s Bells.
Now taking up the director’s role, Jacinta brings her prodigious energy, talent and a wealth of experience from her own love of literature and of telling a good story, to this production of 'Bookworms'.
Starring well known TADS members Frank O’Brien, Susan Trodd, Gillian Harrington, Damien Mitchell, Laura Molloy, Dermot Muldowney and Ciara Kinnarney audiences are in for a night of fun ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous!
Tickets are available now on www.eskerarts.ie or through the Esker Arts Box Office.
