Motorist caught driving at more than 140km per hour in Offaly
A motorist was detected driving at 140km per hour in Offaly yesterday (Sunday).
Gardai carrying out a roads policing operation for the May bank holiday weekend said the vehicle was clocked while travelling at 141 km per hour, in a 100km per hour zone, on the R446, at Faheeran, Moate, on the Offaly side of the Westmeath/Offaly border.
More than 2,400 drivers were detected for speeding offences during the initial four days of the bank holiday weekend roads policing operation, which began on Thursday morning.
Between 7am on Thursday and 7am today (Monday) there were two fatalities as a result of traffic collisions on our roads. The total number of fatalities on Irish roads this year is now 57.
Gardai added this morning that a total of 123 people had been arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant, alcohol or drugs, over the bank holiday weekend. In addition, in excess of 240 drivers were detected for holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.
