Tullamore tidy towns continue progress of river clean-up

With the judging for this year's Tidy Towns competition coming up in June, Tullamore Tidy Towns continue its efforts to improve matters across the town – including an ongoing Tullamore River Clean-Up.

Recently, the Tidy Towns were joined by the Offaly Search & Recovery team, along with volunteers from the Tullamore & District Angling Club, to clear the river of many items including traffic cones, shopping trollies, bicycles, an ironing board, pipes, cable, plastic, bottles, cans, pint glasses, saucepans and general litter.

While the Offaly Search & Recovery team were geared up and waded through the river with a rib, members of the District Angling Club and Tidy Towns volunteers used long and short litter pickers to clean the banks and to help when needed to pull out the larger dumped material, which was collected by Offaly County Council.

The Tidy Towns committee said that 'it is great to see the improved water quality and we are glad to say we are getting on top of the litter after continuous years of tackling sections at a time'. It added that the Tidy Towns committee hope to soon be in a position to move on to enhancing the river bank.

The Tidy Towns committee continue its voluntary programme each Wednesday from 7pm - meeting at Kilbride Plaza - and every Sunday morning from 8.30am (meeting on William Street), and anyone who feels they can contribute is invited to attend. Tullamore Tidy Towns is looking to achieve its 12th gold medal in a row in this year's competition.

It is also looking for people and businesses to 'Adopt an Area' or specific project, and its members will support the businesses with tools, gloves, bags and hi-viz. For further information people can contact Shane at 087 9546620 or email: info@tullamoretidytowns.ie
