Offaly writer selected for prestigious national mentoring programme
Offaly writer Johannes Bulfin has been selected as county’s mentee for the Irish Writers Centre National Mentoring Programme 2026.
Johannes is one of just 41 writers chosen from over 500 applicants nationwide, marking a significant achievement in a highly competitive process.
A qualified aquatic biologist and founder of Watershed Fly Fishing, Johannes' creative practice is deeply informed by his connection to the natural world, drawing on years of experience exploring Ireland’s waterways and landscapes, as well as time spent abroad. His work is rooted in place, environment and close observation.
The Irish Writers Centre National Mentoring Programme is one of Ireland’s most respected professional development opportunities for writers, and pairs emerging and established writers with leading literary mentors for one-to-one guidance and support over the course of a year.
Speaking on his selection, Johannes said: “I am very appreciative of this unique opportunity to develop my writing. I look forward to seeing the craft from new angles and working with an experienced writer.”
Since its establishment in 2017, the programme has played an important role in supporting writers on the path to publication and creative development.
Throughout 2026, Johannes will work closely with an established writer mentor, developing his craft and gaining new insights into the practice.
Johannes brings a distinctive voice and perspective to his writing, and his written work has included contributions to journals such as Fly Culture (now discontinued), Trout and Salmon, and The Drake.
His writing also extends to his professional and everyday life, from correspondence with government departments to social media for his business. As he describes himself, his stress levels “correlate directly with water-flow charts and Met Éireann predictions.”
He has a young family, for whom he is deeply grateful, and a self-reflective sense of humour about the role he plays in the wider world.
