Offaly school marks 90 years with 'Bog Walk' fundraiser this Sunday

St Mary’s National School in Pullough is celebrating a major milestone this year as it marks its 90th academic year, with a special community fundraising event taking place this Sunday, May 31.

The school and Parents’ Association are hosting “The Bog Walk”, bringing together past and present pupils, families and the wider community for a scenic 25km walk and run through some of Offaly’s best-known natural landscapes.

As part of the celebrations, organisers are also appealing for old school photographs, class pictures and memories from years gone by. These will be shared online and displayed in the school on the day, helping to showcase the history and heritage of St Mary’s over nine decades.

Participants are invited to walk or run at their own pace, either completing the full route or joining as part of a relay team with family or friends.

Supporters can also contribute by donating to walkers or teams, spreading the word, or simply attending on the day to welcome participants back to the school.

The event will begin at 9am, with those completing the full 25km route, or stage one of the walk, asked to sign in at St Mary’s NS in Pullough in advance. The school will open from 8am.

The route will take participants along the Grand Canal Greenway into Turraun Wetlands and around Lough Boora Discovery Park, returning to Pullough via Boora Church.

The course is described as flat and scenic, and suitable for walkers and runners of all abilities. Refreshments and water stations will be provided along the route.

The event is not only a celebration of the school’s 90-year history but also a fundraiser to support improvements to facilities and resources for current and future pupils.
