New special needs modular classroom approved for Offaly school
Kinnitty National School has been approved for a new Special Education Needs (SEN) modular classroom.
The decision, which has received initial approval under the Department of Education’s Modular Framework Programme, will provide an additional SEN classroom at the school.
Fine Gael TD for Offaly, John Clendennen, said the news will help to meet the growing educational needs of pupils in the Kinnitty area.
He welcomed confirmation of the decision from Minister for Education Hildegarde Naughton.
Deputy Clendennen said: "I was delighted to visit the school this morning (Thursday, June 4) to discuss the project with the teaching staff.
"This is very positive news for the school, its pupils, staff and the wider school community. The provision of an additional SEN classroom will ensure that children who require additional supports can continue to access those supports in a modern and appropriate learning environment.”
Independent TD for Offaly Carol Nolan also welcomed confirmation of the news, saying it will provide much-needed additional capacity and specialist accommodation to support pupils with additional needs, and represents a significant step forward for inclusive education in rural Offaly:
“I am delighted to see Kinnitty National School receive this approval. This is a positive outcome for families in Kinnitty and surrounding areas who have been advocating for enhanced special education provision,” Deputy Nolan said.
“I have consistently raised supports for the school in the Dáil, including through a recent parliamentary question where I sought clarity on grants and supports available for special educational needs facilities at the school,” she added.
Deputy Clendennen said the approval of the new classroom is another important step in ensuring the school has the facilities needed to continue supporting students for many years to come.
“I know the school has worked closely with the Department of Education to progress this application and I would like to commend Principal Franks, the board of management and staff for their continued commitment to providing the very best educational experience for all pupils.”
Deputy Nolan added that she will continue to press the Department to fast-track the project.
“I will be urging the Department to expedite the delivery of this modular unit so that our children can benefit as quickly as possible. Delivering this accommodation without delay is essential, and I will continue to support Kinnitty National School every step of the way to ensure the project moves forward rapidly,” concluded Deputy Nolan.
Deputy Clendennen also reaffirmed his commitment to working with the school and the Department of Education to support the delivery of the project as it progresses through the next stages.
