Midlands Science wins the funding for their consistent work in taking science to the community

Offaly's Midlands Science awarded Ireland Funds grant

Known for their work in promoting science in the community, Offaly-based non-profit organisation Midlands Science has been awarded funding by The Ireland Funds, a global philanthropic network. The funding received was part of a grant round named 'Heart of the Community', which supports organisations focused on education and innovation, as well as building stronger, resilient communities.

This latest round of funding totals $1 million and supports education initiatives that expand access to learning for people of all ages, alongside innovative programmes addressing pressing social challenges and empowering communities. Midlands Science fits this bill perfectly with their round-the-year outreach programmes for primary and secondary schools, apart from special projects. The Ireland Funds America, the largest of the global chapters of The Ireland Funds, was instrumental in making these grants possible.

Reacting to the development, Jackie Gorman, CEO of Midlands Science, said: “The support of The Ireland Funds Heart of the Community Fund will allow us to continue to engage as many people as possible in the midlands with science in a way that is meaningful and impactful for them. This means that our outreach is not just in the service of science but in the service of society itself as it allows us all to see that science is a key part of all of our lives. It provides opportunities for everyone. The insightful support of The Ireland Funds to date has made a huge difference to our work and the communities we work with.”

Caitriona Fottrell, President & CEO of The Ireland Funds, said: “Across Ireland, organisations are responding to local challenges with ambition, creativity and deep community knowledge, and this funding helps give them the resources to go further. From expanding access to education to supporting innovative ideas, these grants are helping drive meaningful progress across the island. None of this happens without the generosity of our donors who continue to support real progress across the island.”
