Offaly County Council elects its new Cathaoirleach

Fianna Fáil Cllr Declan Harvey has today (Monday) been elected as new Cathaoirleach of Offaly County Council.

Having only recently relinquished the role of Cathaoirleach of Tullamore Municipal District, Cllr Harvey previously served as county council chair from 2021-2022.

Cllr Harvey's election was made this afternoon (Monday) at the Offaly County Council AGM. He was nominated for the position by Cllr Frank Moran, Fianna Fáil, and seconded by Independent Cllr Sean O'Brien.

Fine Gael's Cllr Noel Cribbin was also nominated for the position, by Cllr Neil Feighery, a nomination seconded by Cllr Liam Quinn.

Cllr Harvey's election was confirmed when he received ten votes in his favour and nine against (Cllr Cribbin's vote was nine for and ten against).

Cllr Harvey was first elected to Tullamore Town Council in 2009 and to Tullamore Municipal District in 2014 and 2019.

He succeeds Cllr John Leahy as Cathaoirleach. Cllr Frank Moran was later voted in as Leas-Cathaoirleach, pipping Cllr Eleanor Clendennen of Fine Gael by the narrowest of margins.
