Rowing the Shannon to raise funds for Parkinson's
In a bid to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson's, two friends, Trevor Morrissey and Mike O'Sullivan, are on an arduous challenge to journey across the Shannon, on a canoe.
With an aim to canoe the river from source to sea, the two began the expedition on June 12 from Dowra, Co Cavan. The duo is currently in the midlands, and expected to conclude the journey at the Shannon Estuary on June 21.
The 'Paddling for Parkinson’s' fundraiser is in aid of the Midwest Branch of Parkinson's Ireland, for people living with Parkinson’s and their families, to provide exercise classes, support groups, information services and community support.
The duo is paddling at an average of 25km each day, camping at night along the river, crossing multiple counties and communities including Athlone and Offaly. For Trevor, who loves adventure, nature and journeys, there is also a personal connection to the challenge.
He said: “I am a carer for my mother, who has Parkinson's for the last 20 years. Throughout every mile, I am thinking of my mom and the many people I know fighting this condition. The goal behind this journey is not raising funds alone.
"We also wanted to show solidarity and support to the people with Parkinson's and so also their carers. As a carer I find myself very lucky to be a able to go on a journey like this, because I have my brother and family to take care of my mom.”
Mike, Trevor's friend and an experienced hand at canoeing is the anchor for this voyage. “I am delighted he is with me on this journey,” said Trevor who has a flair for journeys and has walked the Pilgrim's path between France and Spain.
