Offaly meteorologist warns of 'heat stress' as temperatures to soar on Thursday

Offaly meteorologist, Cathal Nolan of Ireland’s Weather Channel, has warned that Ireland could face significant heat stress on Thursday as unusually high temperatures combine with extreme humidity.

He said the temperatures will lead to high moisture content in the air, limiting the body’s ability to regulate temperature through sweating, increasing the risk of heat stress, particularly for older adults, young children, and those with underlying health conditions.

"In my 33 years of observing meteorology in Ireland I have not seen dew point temperatures as high as those expected on Thursday," he said.

He also highlighted the likelihood of “tropical nights” on Wednesday and Thursday, where temperatures may not fall below 20°C in some areas.

Looking ahead to Thursday night, Nolan warned that atmospheric conditions could become highly unstable.

Strong surface heating, very high dew points, and significant instability may create an environment conducive to severe thunderstorm development.

If storms do form, he said, they could bring a risk of localised flooding, frequent lightning, large hail, and strong winds.

“Such warnings are issued in the interest of public safety and general awareness well ahead of such events so that plans can be put in place and preventive measures taken,” he said.
