Ireland’s tallest Tree House opens after enhancements at Birr Castle
A popular summer destination with kids, Birr Castle Demesne has officially reopened Ireland’s tallest Treehouse, after undergoing enhancements. The re-imagined Treehouse has many updated features including an additional tower and a large tube slide. The reimagined Treehouse has been upgraded to deliver increased play value and improved safety standards while ensuring full compliance with current playground safety regulations.
The 120-acre historic site has been undergoing enhancements like the Discovery train which launched earlier this year. The redevelopment was carried out following a significant investment programme by the Birr Scientific and Heritage Foundation. The upgraded Treehouse forms part of a wider, ongoing investment programme across Birr Castle Demesne aimed at strengthening Ireland’s leading heritage and science tourism destination.
John O’ Grady, the general manager, said: “This enhancement is expected to further reinforce Birr Castle Demesne’s position as a key driver of regional and national tourism, supporting increased family visitation and encouraging repeat engagement with the wider site offering. It is vital for us to continue evolving the visitor experience while preserving the integrity of the Birr’s historic and scientific legacy.”
Specialist playground designers Proludic, and their Irish distributor Garden Escapes NI, aimed the redevelopment to be a refurbishment and enhancement of the existing structure rather than a replacement. This was done to ensure that Ireland’s Treehouse retains its original character and evolve to provide even more fun opportunities for children aged six and upwards. There are many other activities on site for younger children also.
Originally opened in 2013, the Treehouse was designed to broaden the appeal of Birr Castle Demesne to young families and has since become one of its most recognisable and best-loved features, playing a central role in attracting a new generation of visitors to the heritage site.
