Grehan plays pivotal role in Ireland's European golf success
Tullamore golfer Stuart Grehan played a pivotal role as Ireland won the European Amateur Team Championships with final victory over hosts Estonia on Sunday afternoon.
The Open bound Grehan was influential to the team's first success in the competition since 2008, the win complementing his Amateur Championship victory in Royal Liverpool last month.
That Amateur Championship win secured the 33 year old's place at three of golf's four major tournaments, the 2026 Open and the US Masters and US Open in 2027, and there was further joy for Grehan as he proudly represented his country in Estonia.
The tournament win was sealed by Roscommon golfer Thomas Higgins when he holed a 20 foot putt on the 20th hole, but it was Grehan's form which laid the foundation for Ireland's stellar success.
Grehan and playing partner John Doyle claimed a morning foursomes win to set the tone for what was to come in the final and he continued his fine form when comprehensively winning his singles match over Richard Teder, on a 5&4 scoreline.
Speaking to Irish Golfer following the team's success, captain Damien Coyne said that Grehan should "compete" at this weekend's Open at Royal Birkdale if he continues his current form.
"Stuart has had an exceptional time. I said it to him he was that good, if he brings that form into next week he will compete. He is going to go to Birkdale on a real high," Coyne said.
