Work starts on watermain replacement project in Birr

Uisce Éireann will carry out leakage reduction works to support residents and the business community in Orchard Lane Birr at the start of next month.

The national water utility company said such investment at the location will "deliver a more reliable water supply for local homes and businesses."

The works, which Uisce Éireann said are due to be completed by the end of August, involve the replacement of almost 200 metres of old and damaged watermains replaced with new modern pipes along Orchard Lane.

Uisce Éireann has advised of "some short-term water interruptions" during the works with Orchard Lane closed while the watermains replacement project remains ongoing.

"The upgrade will help reduce the loss of treated drinking water, improve the performance of the local network and provide a more reliable water supply for the local community," Uisce Éireann said.

Welcoming the commencement of the project, Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said the imminent replacement of ageing watermains will help to reduce disruption to the water supply in the area.

"Homes, businesses, schools and community facilities rely on a dependable water supply every day.

"By replacing these ageing watermains, we are helping to reduce disruptions, strengthen the local network and provide a more reliable service for the people who live and work here.

"These improvements will help protect valuable treated drinking water, reduce leakage and support the community with a stronger and more resilient water supply for many years to come," the Portfolio Manager stated.

The project will be delivered by Shareridge on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
