Motorist clocked at 26km over speed limit outside Tullamore

Gardai conducting a roads policing operation for the August bank holiday weekend have detected a motorist travelling 26 kilometres above the speed limit on the N52 outside Tullamore.

The speeding detection took place yesterday (Sunday), with the driver found to be travelling at 126 kilometres per hour in a 100km zone at N52 Heath, Screggan, Offaly.

The roads policing operation for the long weekend got underway on Thursday and continues until tomorrow, Tuesday.

On Sunday there were two fatalities as a result of traffic collisions on Irish roads, bringing the total number of fatalities to date this year to 110.

Throughout this weekend's roads policing operation, Gardaí are conducting both statutory mandatory intoxicant testing and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints.

A Garda spokesperson said that, during the operation to date, a total of 121 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant (alcohol and drugs).

Just over 2,700 drivers were detected for speeding offences during the first four days of the operation.

Other notable speeds detected on Sunday included 101 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the R463 at Rosmadda West, Parteen, county Clare.

During the first three days of the policing operation, just under 310 drivers were detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.
