Profile of a Mountlucas Parkrunner: Meet Gordon Nutterfield

A Q&A with Gordon Nutterfield, from Ballyfore, who recently completed his 100th parkrun at Mountlucas parkrun in Offaly.

When did you first complete a parkrun?

I completed my first parkrun in 2018. You might say accidentally, as work had promoted a five-week couch to 5k, and there was a medal at the end of it. I joined Mountlucas parkrun and trained for 4 weeks to prepare. I never planned to continue.

What is your favourite thing about parkrun?

My favourite thing about parkrun is that hour of peace on a Saturday morning where you can just reset and let your mind wander and meet new friends which, without parkrun, our paths never would have crossed.

How does it feel to have reached the significant milestone of 100 parkruns?

I'm very proud to have reached 100 parkruns. I definitely never thought I would get near to 50, never mind 100! It's up there with any achievement I have reached, but personally, it's more satisfying as you get older and the legs get heavier!

What is your favourite parkrun memory?

My favourite memory happens before we begin each week when we congratulate people reaching new milestones and welcoming new visitors from both near and far.

What words would you use to describe Mountlucas parkrun?

Mountlucas parkrun is a very special place. I don't think you will find one like it anywhere else in Ireland with the scenery, the smell of the bog, the breeze, and most importantly, the camaraderie and friendships which develop immediately. I recommend to everyone to sign up and go there every Saturday for both their mental health and fitness.

Mountlucas parkrun takes place at Bord na Móna Mountlucas windfarm every Saturday morning at 9.30am sharp. There's something for everyone at Mountlucas parkrun whether you want to walk, run, volunteer or just meet new people. For more information see parkrun.ie/mountlucas.
