Parenting support programme launched in Offaly and Laois

Offaly Libraries, in partnership with Laois Libraries, is delighted to present the Laois Offaly Parenting Support Programme 2026, a series of free talks and workshops for parents and families. Supported by CYPSC, the programme offers practical advice and support for parents of children of all ages.

The programme begins in September and includes a variety of free events for parents, caregivers, healthcare professionals, teachers, special needs assistants, and anyone working with children and young people. Its aim is to provide simple, practical strategies to help parents build positive relationships with their children and confidently manage challenges as they arise.

In September, Offaly Libraries will host two Sensory Toy Showcases in Edenderry Library and Tullamore Library, highlighting the sensory toys available to borrow through the library service. Libraries across Laois and Offaly will also offer Sensory Messy Play events for children.

This year's programme includes a strong focus on supporting parents of teenagers. Jigsaw, the youth mental health charity, will deliver talks in Birr, Edenderry, Portlaoise, and Tullamore libraries, covering topics such as supporting teenagers' mental health, recognising warning signs, accessing advice and support, and starting conversations about wellbeing.

Other highlights include a seminar with Dr Mary O'Kane in Tullamore Library on October 29 at 6.30pm, where parents can learn practical ways to help children build confidence and resilience. Parent First Aid workshops will take place in Birr, Edenderry, Tullamore, and Mountmellick libraries, providing essential life-saving skills for responding to family medical emergencies. In addition, Dave Saunders, CEO of From Lads to Dads, will deliver an informal session for fathers and grandfathers, sharing practical advice and exploring the important role dads play in their children's lives.

In Birr and Tullamore libraries, Offaly Domestic Violence Support Services (ODVSS) will deliver a talk on understanding abuse in teenage relationships, covering coercive control, consent, healthy boundaries, and warning signs such as controlling behaviour.

For families with young children, Tiny Music School will offer fun, interactive music sessions for babies and parents, using songs, stories, instruments, and sound games to encourage children aged 0 to 3 years to explore music through play. Parent-and-child yoga sessions will also provide families with an opportunity to relax, connect, and enjoy quality time together.
