Major progress on Tullamore refuge plans

Plans for a domestic violence refuge in Tullamore have received a major boost following the appointment of a design team and project manager.

The centre is due to contain ten self-contained family units with 24/7 crisis response, therapeutic supports and pathways to recovery.

The plans include ancillary services as well as communal spaces for residents and facilities such as outdoor play space and children’s sensory room.

The project is being developed by Oaklee Housing in partnership with Offaly County Council and Offaly Domestic Violence Support Service (ODVSS).

In a statement to Offaly Independent this week, Oaklee Housing confirmed the appointment of the design team and project.

It said, the project will now progress to the next stages of design development and planning.

ODVSS also welcomed what it said was an important step towards a dedicated refuge in Offaly.

"We look forward to working with Oaklee to ensure the design reflects the needs of survivors, and their children." said Anne Clarke, CEO of ODVSS.

"We also acknowledge the support of Cuan and the Department of Justice in progressing this vital project alongside Offaly County Council who have recognised the need to provide emergency refuge accommodation for women and children experiencing domestic abuse in Offaly."

An update on the project was delivered to members of the Housing and Integration Strategic Policy Committee of Offaly County Council in recent months.

Preliminary approval for the development of the domestic violence refuge in Tullamore was provided by the Government in December last.

A statement at the time on behalf of Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan and Housing Minister James Browne said Tullamore was identified as a priority location for a refuge under the third National Strategy on Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.

It is hoped that construction will be completed on the refuge by late 2028.
