Banagher woman launches memoir on coping with metastatic breast cancer

Recently, a big number of supporters gathered at the Village Barn, Tyrellspass, to cheer for Carol Grogan as she launched her book, The Shadow That Walks Beside Me. The book follows her journey after a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer altered her life irreversibly.

As against what is typically referred to as breast cancer, metastatic breast cancer is an advanced stage cancer (stage 4) and has spread from the breast to other parts of the body including bones, lungs, liver, or brain. It is not curable but modern treatments and targeted therapies can help one live longer with good quality of life.

Carol's moving book details the de novo diagnosis (meaning the advanced cancer arose spontaneously, and didn't develop from a pre-existing stage), undergoing treatment, coping with side effects, and learning to live with the uncertainty that comes with an incurable illness. While the book was unveiled by Birr author Dearbhaile O'Hare, who had written and published her own account of fighting breast cancer in 2023, the role of MC was played by Shane McDonagh.

“While cancer is at the heart of the story, this book is ultimately about resilience, hope, and finding a way forward when life changes in an instant. By sharing my experiences, I hope to raise awareness of metastatic breast cancer and offer encouragement and companionship to others facing similar challenges,” said Carol.

The evening was seeped in emotions as Carol and Dearbhaile spoke about their experience of the ailment, reciting poems, and also the catharsis that writing provided to them. Anne Scally, chairperson of Dóchas Tullamore also shared her thoughts.

The debut author also shared that the funds raised from the book's sale will support two local charities -- Dóchas Cancer Support Services in Tullamore, and East Galway and Midlands Cancer Support in Ballinasloe.
