Man charged with murder of two in Edenderry house fire
A 22-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murders of a four-year-old boy and his grandaunt in Edenderry.
Michael Dunne was brought before Judge Andrew Cody at Tullamore District Court on Wednesday morning over the fatal house fire in Edenderry, Offaly last December, which claimed the lives of little Tadgh and 60-year-old Mary Holt.
Dunne has been in custody since he was initially charged with criminal damage by arson and endangerment on May 1.
The court heard he now faces a further three charges, bringing it to five in total.
Detective Garda Tom Dunne of Tullamore Garda Station was sworn into the witness stand to give evidence.
He said he met the accused in the courthouse on Wednesday morning at 10.22am.
The defendant made no reply after caution to the three charges and was handed a true copy of each.
Dunne, who has an address in Kildare, was charged with the murders of Tadgh and Mary at 29 Castleview Park, Edenderry, Offaly on December 6, 2025.
The third alleged offence relates to "intentionally or recklessly" causing serious harm to Pauline Holt, Tadgh's granny and Mary's sister.
Judge Cody also allowed an amendment to the endangerment charge to add four men's names onto it.
Addressing the court, Garda Sergeant Richard Thornton said that the Director of Public Prosecutions directed trial by indictment.
Dunne was remanded in custody to appear again next Tuesday.
The court heard that a book of evidence will be served on October 28.
Dunne sat in the dock looking forward and did not address the short hearing.
Little Tadgh was visiting his granny, Pauline Holt, and grandaunt at the time of the fatal fire.
Pauline was the sole survivor of the blaze. She suffered serious burn injuries in the incident and spent months in hospital recovering.
The investigation into the incident is continuing, led by a team at Tullamore Garda Station.
It is also being supported by detectives from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
