Flooding incident at midlands hotel

A sprinkler system issue resulted in a flooding incident at the Sheraton Athlone Hotel last night.

A unit of Athlone Fire Service assisted at the scene and a spokesperson said an issue with the sprinkler system had resulted in flooding in the tower section of the hotel.

It's understood a number of guests were relocated as a result. It's believed the damage was contained to the tower.

Videos circulating online showed significant volumes of water in the area.

Water also entered a number of outlets in the adjoining Athlone Towncentre Shopping Centre, with videos also indicating water in the foyer of the centre.

The centre posted last night that it would not to be open until 11am.

The post stated: "Please note that due to an issue on site this evening, Athlone Towncentre will not open to the public until 11am on Saturday, 17th.

"If there's any change in these arrangements, we will update our social channels. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

It's not clear if all outlets will be in a position to open at that stage.

The Sheraton Athlone Hotel has been contacted for comment.
