Clonmacnoise added to Google Street View

Clonmacnoise is one of 50 Irish sites that have been added to Google’s Street View.

The service that gives viewers instant access to places they want to see was launched in America in 2007. This week the product celebrated reaching 50 countries, with launches in Hungary and Lesotho along with expanded coverage in Poland and Romania.

This week also saw the largest single update of Street View imagery, including new and updated imagery for almost 350,000 miles of roads across 14 countries.

Of Irish interest are 50 new sites, including Clonmacnois in Offaly. The 49 others added are Castletown House and Maynooth Castle in Kildare; Jerpoint Abbey and Kilkenny Castle in Kilkenny; Ceide Fields and Ballycroy National Park Visitor Centre in Mayo; Derrynane House, Muckross Traditional Farms, Ionad and Bhlascaoid Mhoir – The Blascaoid Centre, Ross Castle, Listowel Castle, Killarney National Park and Gallarus Oratory in Kerry; Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Grangegorman Military Cemetery, Casino at Marino, Military Cemetery, Pearse Museum, Phoenix Park – Peoples’ Flower Gardens, Temple Bar Square an Lusk Heritage Centre in Dublin; Swiss Cottage, Famine War House at Billingarry and Ormond Castle in Tipperary; Doneraile Wildlife Park, Desmond Castle, Fota Arboretum and Gardens and Barryscourt Castle in Cork; Glenveagh National Park and Castle, Donegal Castle, Newmills Corn and Flax Mills and Glebe House and Gallery in Donegal; Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery and Sligo Abbey in Sligo; Duckett’s Grove and Altamont Gardens in Carlow; Adare Castle in Limerick; Ferns Castle in Wexford; Aughnanure Castle, Connemara National Park, Coole Park and Athenry Castle in Galway; Dromore Wood in Clare; Emo Court in Laois; Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow; the Bru na Boinne Visitor Centre and the Battle of the Boyne in Meath; Boyle Abbey in Roscommon, and the Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre in Longford.
