Work to start 'soon' on new Killeigh community centre, AGM told
The start of construction work on the new community centre in Killeigh is "very close", the AGM of the community centre development association heard last week.
The chairperson of the voluntary organisation behind the project, Maria Bannon, gave an in-depth review of last year's activities at the AGM. She said she was positive the start of the build was not far away, and it's hoped that it can be completed in 2023.
The meeting also included an update on the major fundraiser undertaken by the group, the 'Win a House in Meath' draw.
The draw was initially due to happen at the beginning of this year, but it was postponed to December 19 in an effort to maximise ticket sales and raise as much money as possible.
"Ticket sales are at approximately 6,500, and Maria is confident another 1,500 should be sold by the end of draw," said the association's PRO, Martina Gorman.
"Maria noted what a massive undertaking it was and thanked Theresa Kelly for all her hard work and effort as project manager."
One of the positive developments for the community centre project in the last year was its approval for town and village renewal scheme funding, and there was a special mention at the AGM for Ger Cleary and his excellent work as Treasurer in securing these grants.
The building sub group also was thanked for its hard work and efforts in getting this far during challenging times, as well as its professional work ethic with regard the tendering progress.
Ciaran Dunne stated that the community centre would be suitable for all of the community and not just for sporting activities. It will be a community hall, not a sports hall.
The PR group was congratulated for the continued success of the 'People Of Killeigh & Beyond' series of local profiles. There is a possibility of a book of these profiles being published next year.
Martina Gorman extended condolences to the people who had shared their stories for the profile series and had since passed away, with a special mention for the late Phil Deering and Peggie Coonan.
Maria Bannon concluded that the association is very close to building the hall, and as a group, when they meet an obstacle, they methodically work their way through it.
The aim for 2023 would be to see the completion of the building work and to hold the next AGM in the hall.
They would then look at reorganising the committee, ensuring that they never see the hall close in their lifetimes. She thanked the committee for all their hard work and also to Fr John for allowing meetings to be held in the Parochial House.
All of the committee members have agreed to stay on the committee for the coming year. The officers elected were as follows: Chairperson - Maria Bannon; Secretary - Noelle Spollen; Assistant Secretary - Theresa Kelly; Treasurer - Ger Cleary; PRO - Martina Gorman.
