Registration for the 'Pedal for Playground' fundraising cycle takes place at Mucklagh Community Centre on Sunday, May 4, at 9am

Mucklagh community rallies for new inclusive playground with charity cycle

A 50km fundraising cycle will take place from Mucklagh to Cloghan on Sunday, May 4, aimed at raising funds for a brand new, state-of-the-art inclusive community playground in the heart of the village.

Following registration at Mucklagh Community Centre at 9am, over 60 participants will cycle through the Offaly countryside to Cloghan before returning to the village.

Speaking to the Offaly Independent this week, Mucklagh Playground committee secretary, Rachel Scally said that the amenity is much needed in the community.

"We established the playground committee in November 2023, our first fundraising event being a successful scrap metal day in June 2024. We live in a family orientated community so there is much need for a playground in Mucklagh. At the moment we have no such amenity so hopefully in due course we will be in a position to build a playground for the children of our community," Rachel said.

The fundraising campaign aims to create a playground that is accessible, inclusive, and enriching for all children, a space where every child, regardless of ability, can play, learn, and thrive. The development of the playground is a central part of a wider plan to enhance amenities in Mucklagh and build a stronger, more connected community.

“This isn’t just about a playground, it’s about building a community hub that welcomes all children and families. We want Mucklagh to have a safe, fun and inclusive place for every child to enjoy.

“This cycle is a fun and healthy way for the community to come together and contribute to something that will benefit midlands generations to come. We encourage anyone who can afford it to donate to this brilliant cause," Rachel added.

There is no set date in mind for the construction of the community playground but Rachel is hopeful that the eventual fundraising figure realised will receive match funding from local Government to enable the project come to fruition.

Community members, local businesses, and families are encouraged to show their support by donating online at https://mucklaghplayground.fundmajor.com/.

"Participants will be treated to refreshments along the route and a warm community welcome at the finish line with all proceeds from the event will go directly toward the construction of the new playground," Rachel concluded.
