Jeep towing trailer travelling over 50km above speed limit in Offaly

Gardai in Offaly yesterday detected a jeep towing a trailer travelling at more than 50km/h above the speed limit.

Offaly Roads Policing unit detected a jeep towing a trailer travelling at 132km/h. Gardai stated that when towing a trailer, the maximum legal speed limit is 80km/h – regardless of whether it is on a motorway, national or regional road.

"Travelling in excess of this limit while towing greatly increases stopping distances and the risk of trailer sway, putting all road users in danger. The driver will now face prosecution," gardai stated on the An Garda Síochána Laois/Offaly Facebook page.

They advised motorists to remember that the maximum speed when towing is 80km/h, to always ensure trailers are roadworthy and properly secured, to drive to the conditions, and to share the road safely.

"Keeping our roads safe is everyone’s responsibility," the post concluded.
