Tullamore Hospital raises awareness during Palliative Care Week 2025
Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore (MRHT) hosted an information day to raise awareness of palliative care as part of Palliative Care Week 2025, themed “Living for Today, Planning for Tomorrow.”
Palliative care focuses on living well while planning ahead, supporting patients and families physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It can be provided at any stage after diagnosis and alongside treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
What palliative care offers: Relief from pain and symptoms; Emotional and spiritual support; Guidance for families and carers; Care at home, in hospital, or community settings; Improved quality of life from diagnosis through end-of-life.
Dr Mark Howard, Consultant in Palliative Medicine, explained: “Palliative care supports people with incurable illness to live as well as possible for as long as possible.”
Talks during the week highlighted community resources and the importance of seamless care between hospital and home. Staff emphasised that palliative care is not just for the final days of life, but about living fully from the time of diagnosis.
General Manager Louisea Burke praised the team’s commitment: “We want to help patients and families live as well as possible for as long as possible.”
