The homicide rate in the Laois/Offaly Garda Division dropped by 80% in the last year, the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) have revealed.

The CSO released its figures for the final quarter of 2009 yesterday (Thursday), which revealed that in total last year only one homicide offence was recorded in Laois/Offaly, compared to five during 2008.

Last year's homicide offence of murder occurred in the second quarter of the year. In 2008, while five homicide offences were recorded in the Garda division, only one of these was murder, which was recorded in the final three months of the year. All of the other four offences were dangerous driving leading to death.
