Bord na Móna has signalled its intention to open a materials recycling and waste transfer facility in a location at Derrygreenagh in North Offaly.

The company has applied to the Environmental Protection Agency for a waste licence this week, for a facility that will accept 99,000 tonnes of mainly non-hazardous municipal solid waste, construction and demolition waste.

The main purpose of the Derrygreenagh site would be the "recycling or reclamation of organic substances which are not used as solvents".

Other activities at the facility would include; blending or mixture, repackaging, storage, as well as recycling or reclamation of metals and metal compounds, recycling or reclamation of other inorganic materials, exchange of waste, and storage of waste.

Menwhile, the company is awaiting a decision from An Bord Pleanala for permission to build a gas-fired power station in the same area.
