Curley"s 5k victory secures Spring League title

The third and final leg of the Spring league took place in the Harriers on Tuesday of this week with individual and team honours up for grabs. The distance was 5000 metres and was run over eight laps of the tarmac course. It was a foul night for running with wind and rain. On a night that was not conducive to front running, it was no surprise to see the leading bunch packed together for the early stages. The front group was made up of Adrian Curley, Anthony Rickard, Declan Madden and Mick Murphy with Johnny Feery tucked in behind these. With three laps to go, Curley made a break and only Anthony Rickard attempted to follow. However, Rickard could not stay with Curley for long who went on to win easily in the end by a margin of ninety metres from Anthony Rickard. This was a great run from Rickard who seems to be improving with every race. Indeed, the same could be said of Declan Madden who finished third in a time of 17.40. Mick Murphy who was feeling the effects of a duathlon last Sunday finished in a creditable fourth place in 17.45 followed closely by Johnny Feery. The overall winner of the Spring League was Adrian Curley with 5 points. Second was Mick Murphy with 8 points and Anthony Rickard with 10 points took third place. Fran Mollen"s Team B were the team winners with 565 points. Second were Martina Conlon"s A team on 529 points and Larry Rigney"s C team were third with 436 points.
