Cardiac Risk in the Young seeks Offaly women for marathon

Jacqui Hurley, RTE sports broadcaster this week popped her trainers on with Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) co-founder Marie Greene and CRY Supporter Gillian Carter to appeal to the ladies in Offaly to join The Cardiac Risk in the Young CRY Mini Marathon Magic Team and participate in this year"s Flora Women"s Mini Marathon. Over 5,000 people suffer sudden cardiac death in Ireland each year, of which 60 to 80 are under the age of 35 years. In response to this need a dedicated new treatment centre, The Centre for Cardiovascular Risk in Younger Persons (CRYP Centre) has been opened in Tallaght Hospital. Speaking at the launch Co Founder Marie Greene said: 'I"m excited we are launching The CRY 2009 Mini Marathon Magic Team. We had a fantastic team together in 2008 who were full of fun and spirit and that is what we are aiming for again this year. So if you like having fun, getting fit and raising money for families all over Ireland give us a call!' All funds raised from CRY Mini Marathon Magic Team efforts will go directly to the CRYP Centre, which officially opened last November. The CRYP Centre receives no subsidies from the government and is only funded by fundraising activities and generous donations that are required to keep the centre running. Fundraising is crucial on an ongoing basis to cover the running costs of the charity and the centre. Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) was established in 2002 by Marie Greene and husband Michael who had experienced the sudden death of their son and were troubled by the lack of systematic medical and emotional support. The centre aims to screen a minimum of 1,600 young patients annually free of charge. The centre is the only full-time service in the country dedicated to evaluation of inherited heart disease and cardiac disease in younger persons.
