Tullamore Golf Club

Open Week Open week is now in full swing with great entries and many visitors from other clubs and even abroad playing over the first three days. In the Singles on Friday Mark O"Grady (11) won with 38pts, Paul Galvin (12) from Castle Barna was second on the same score and third was Gordon Conroy from the Heath G.C., with Tullamore"s Michael Bryant (15) in 4th place. The Gross went to Niall Flanagan (4) with 32 pts. On Saturday there was a fourball sponsored by Tullamore Hardware (Jimmy Feery) and Ray Coughlan & Dermot Cunningham (15) led the field with 42 pts playing off three quarter handicaps. Good shooting lads. Michael Bryant (14), now sporting a new handicap, from Friday teamed up with Oliver Conlon (14) to record 41 pts and take 2nd place. Third were those war-horses Christy Corroon (8) and JJ O"Neill (16) with 40 pts. Hard luck to Christy who was playing off 7 on Saturday but his handicap went up to 8 that evening. Sunday"s competition was sponsored by Tim O"Sullivan Plant Hire and again there were so many entries that players were playing until dark. The winner with a great score was Mick (as he likes to be called) Egan (11) with 41 pts, 2nd was Philip McCarthy with 39pts, and Conor Daly (9) was 3rd with the same score and 4th was Alan Clarke (13) with 38 pts, with the gross going to John Cullen (5) with 32 pts. Inter-Club Competitions There was disappointment again for Tullamore in the Junior Cup qualifier at Co Longford G.C. last weekend. Tullamore played through the worst of the weather on Saturday and in very trying conditions did well to qualify in 4th spot for the match play the following day with 335. All the better scores came in late in the evening when the weather and conditions had much improved and Edenderry led the qualifying with 327 and were Tullamore"s opponents the following morning. Tullamore"s counting scores on Saturday were Stuart Grehan 82; Colm Cassidy 90; Phil O"Reilly 82 and Larry Larkin 81. The other qualifiers were New Forest and Esker Hills. On Sunday morning Tullamore lost 3/2 to the eventual winners Edenderry. Stuart Grehan played well but lost out on the 18th & David Flanagan lost out on the 17th. Larry Larkin won his match 3/2. Hopefully Edenderry will now make it through the Leinster Finals in Mullingar in July to the All Ireland in Tullamore in September. The next Tullamore attempt in progressing in the Cups & Shields is the Jimmy Bruen qualifier which takes place in Moate on 6th & 7th June. The team selected is John O"Shea & Kevin McEntee; P J McIntyre & Denis Guinan; JJ Flanagan & Seamus Murray; Pat Corcoran & Darragh O"Toole and David Flanagan & Larry Lynam. The reserves, who one hopes will be required on Sunday, are Philip McCarthy, Michael Fox, Seamus McKeogh, Conor Daly and John Hopkins. Match Play There next round of the Foursomes match-play must be played by 10th June. In the Scratch match play there were some notable wins. Martin Darcy beat Phil O"Reilly on the 16th. David Flanagan and Derrick Molloy have progressed in the Daily Mail fourball when they defeated David Reynolds, now to be a tour caddy, and Paul Stewart from Esker Hills. Best wishes to Shane Lowry in his professional career and needless to say the club will be watching his progress with keen interest and cheering for him on the pro circuit.
