Edenderry project wins $10,000

A multi-use community project for Edenderry has won its creator $10,000. DIT student Bernard Brennan submitted an entry to a competition organised by the International Council for Caring Communities in conjunction with the United Nations Program for Human Settlements (UN-HABITAT) and United Nations Programme on Ageing, Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) entitled "International Communities: A Society for All Ages". His project went on to win first place, with praise being given for its presentation and creative solutions to a complex challenge. Bernard picked up his winnings in the UN Headquarters in New York on World Habitat Day, October 1. Describing his proposal for a multi-use community project for a medium-size Irish town evolving as a post-industrial community, Bernard said he focused on improving public space and providing facilities that are currently missing. "The project contains a creche, old people's day centre, performance space, sport facilities, covered market area, ceremonial rooms and archive," he explained.
