Traditional skills programme kicks off with Kilcormac workshop

Traditional skills were once a way of life in every town and village in the country, but unfortunately are now seen to be part of the past.

“Legacy” is an Offaly Local Development Company series of training events however that’s designed to bridge the gap between now and then.

Legacy’s aim is to establish a series of events that will be instrumental in preserving traditional skills in Offaly.

The first event of the series will take place on Thursday next, June 27 from 7pm to 9.30pm in Kilcormac Community Centre.

Thursday night’s workshop will be facilitated by Irish Times journalist and author of “Irish Craft Hands On” Sylvia Thompson.

On the night Sylvia will take attendees through what’s included in that book – stitching, weaving, restoration and more – and there will also be an opportunity to meet some skilled craft makers.

The event will be an interactive evening that will welcome everyone from the age of 18 and over.

“We want to hear your thoughts, your ideas and get your input so that we can make this the best training programme possible,” organisers say.

Those interesting in attending should contact aileen@traditionalskills.ie before Wednesday, June 26.
