45% of COVID-19 deaths were of nursing home patients

There were 730 confirmed deaths of patients with COVID-19 by 11am, today, Tuesday.

 394 deaths are from care settings, including 330 from nursing homes. The number of deaths in nursing homes accounts for 45% of the overall national total

Another 108 deaths are now being assessed from care settings as to possible COVID-19 cases, including 64 from nursing homes. These are not included in the ‘lab confirmed’ 730 deaths.

There are now 16,040 cases, and the latest geographical breakdown, as of midnight, Sunday, shows there were 195 cases in Offaly.

Separately, a breakdown of the 15,185 cases confirmed by midnight on Saturda supplied by the Health Protection Survillance Centre, shows that:

*26.4% of cases were healthcare workers

*There were 478 clusters of cases, accounting for 3,139 cases.

*30 of the cases related to babies under the age of 1.

*There were 820 cases in the HSE Midlands area (Longford/Westmeath/Laois and Offaly)

There were 242 healthcare workers in the Midlands area who have contracted the virus out of a national total of 4,009

Of the 478 clusters reported nationally by midnight, April 18, 42 were in the HSE Midlands area
