Drop in temperatures could bring snow later in the week

While the week has started out mild, a drop in temperatures as the week progresses will produce wintry conditions that could suggest the first snow of the season.

That's according to Met Éireann who say it's to turn much colder from Wednesday onwards.

Wednesday morning will start our showery before clearing and turning blustery, bringing colder air in across the country in stages.

Winds veering west to northwest will reach 40 to 70 km/h in places, and will see temperatures fall to between 2 and 4 degrees later in the day. Frost and showers of hail are forecast for the east of the country that night.

Thursday will start out very cold with morning sunshine, with mixed wintry showers developing during the day in strong northerly winds ranging between 50 to 80 km/h or higher.

Snow and sleet are forecast as temperatures will be only reach 2 to 5 degrees.

The weekend looks to continue in the same vein as winds will become strong and gusty throughout Friday and Saturday, and there's a possibility that heavy snow will settle in places.
