Go-ahead for Clara housing project

Offaly county councillors have given the go-ahead to a significant housing project in Clara.

The council recently sought views, through the Part VIII process by which local authorities consult with the public on local authority projects, on the proposed 38-house project at Raheen.

The development consists of 38 dwellings, including six one-bed single storey buildings, two two-bed bungalows, 12 two-bed two-storey terrace units, one three-bed bungalow, 14 three-bed two storey semi-detached units, one four-bed bungalow and two four-bed two storey semi-detached units.

Following the public consultation process, the council this week approved the report by Chief Executive Anna Marie Delaney, effectively granting planning approval.

In a joint statement Councillor Frank Moran and Deputy Barry Cowen welcomed the project.

Cllr Moran commented: “I welcome this €12m investment within my home town. I will continue to liaise and engage with Deputy Cowen to ensure this project progresses. Delivery is imminent and it speaks volumes to our commitment to the people of Clara. Housing is a key priority for Fianna Fáil, everyone needs a secure and affordable place to call home.

“This is just the start for Clara and due to the commitment and determination of my party colleagues and the subsequent purchase of the priests' house, a second development will follow path in the future.’’

Commenting on last Monday’s approval, Deputy Cowen stated: “Fianna Fail is committed to delivering homes to those who need them. 38 families will reap the benefits of this development. I understand and after consulting with Cllr. Moran, that submissions pertaining to the sewerage, a roundabout and street scaping can be achieved going forward”.

The concerns raised at consultation level will be further discussed and Cllr Moran alongside Deputy Cowen will take Offaly County Council up on their proposal to liaise with residents concerned.

Both Deputy Cowen and Cllr Moran see this project a “win win” for the people of Clara and look forward to further consultation, the commencement of construction and ultimately keys being handed over to deserving families.
